Are Electric Cars Better for the Environment than Gasoline Cars?

In almost every institution, there are debates regarding gasoline powered cars and electric cars. It is on this premise that this discourse has been contemplated. Current essay will discuss the two types of cars. It will provide the definition of the two types of cars. Apart from that, the discourse will unearth the historical processes that led to the creation of two types of cars. Ultimately, the discourse wil give the current trend, as far as electric and gasoline cars are concerned. On a general scale, it is a holistic essay that leaves no stone unturned in highlighting pertinent issues that characterize the two types of cars.

Significance of This Topic

The contemporary society faces a myriad of environmental problems. It has dawned on many leaders that environmental degradation is a reality. Thus, many world leaders have come up with policies to salvage the environment. To achieve this, state leaders have constituted treaties and protocols to help protect the ecosystem. A good example of such a treaty is the Convention on Biological Diversity. It is specifically meant to protect biodiversity. The treaty achieves its goal by discouraging the use of products that can ruin environmental elements.

The ozone layer is another endangered aspect of the environment due to the amount of carbons and halogens released in the environment. As they accumulate, they get into the atmosphere leading to distortion of the ozone layer. Excessive heat on the Earth is caused by the ozone layer destruction. When carbons access the ozone layer, they enter into a react with the ozone components. It causes loopholes within the layer through which direct sun rays can penetrate. As a result, the environmental temperatures rise significantly.

The above environmental problems are mainly hinged on devices that produce carbon components. Among them are cars that use gasoline fuel. Noteworthy, gasoline is a product of petroleum (Riley 2003). It contains carbons. When gasoline undergoes combustion, carbons are released in the air. Once carbons access the air, they react with oxygen to form carbon dioxide and/or carbon monoxide. These are extremely lethal gases that cause environmental degradation through a number of ways. The most common one is the reaction of carbon dioxide with water. The product of the reaction is acidic water which falls as rain. The resulting rain is highly corrosive to devices, and also unsafe for human consumption. Health experts attribute the rising number of health complications to carbonated rains.

The above mentioned problems must be solved to reduce the use of carbon. One of the ways to achieve this is to use electric machines. Electricity is not only safe but also efficient to use. From the above mentioned information it can be concluded that electric cars are environmentaly friendly in comparison to gasoline cars.

Definitions

A gasoline car has a gasoline engine. The engine has got a combustion engine within its inner system which burns gasoline. The difference with other cars is that gasoline car engine has, within it, another engine in which combustion occurs as opposed to a furnace. As combustion takes place, heat is generated to cause expansion which turns turbines or moves pistons.

On the other hand, an electric car is driven by electric power (Westbrook 2001, p. 56). Such car has a motor which is propelled by electric power to make it move. Unlike the gasoline car, this kind of car does not cause any noise. One major attribute of the electric car is its eco-friendly nature. Accordingly, it remains the most preferred car across the sphere.

History

The United States of America had its first gasoline car after two brothers, Charles and Frank Duryea discovered the engines that could combust gasoline. Initially, the two brothers were bicycle makers. On the 20th day of September 1893, they tested their first automobile in Springfield, Massachusetts. In 1896, Charles Duryea established the Duryea Motor Wagon Company. It was the first company to sell gasoline powered vehicles in the United States of America.

In 1834, Thomas Davenport invented the first electric car (Wakefield 1998, p. 235). The car was robust enough to execute chores just like any other car. Before his invention, many people had made several attempts but could not make strong electric cars that could serve the intended purpose. Thomas was a blacksmith who envisioned the society with electrical cars, trains and trolleys. Since the invention, a myriad of scholars and engineers have striven to make electric cars.

As a result, a blend of electric cars has been manufactured over the past century. The most recent ones include the Ford Fusion Hybrid that was manufactured in 2009; Nissan Leaf all electric that was released in 2010; the A-Class E-Cell which was unleashed in 2010; and the Chevy Volt, hybrid car that was first marketed in 2011.

Conclusion

As a matter of fact, petroleum deposits are on the brink of exhaustion. It implies that a shortage of petrol and gasoline is in the offing. Such a reality has induced car industries to find alternative means of powering their cars. While the electric cars are on the increase, gasoline cars seem to be depreciating in terms of popularity. The twenty first century has witnessed numerous discoveries of electric cars. Moreover, every discovery that comes with a car is a notch higher compared to its predecessor cars. It is predicted that in near future the whole world will drive electric cars.
