Facebook is becoming more and more public. Mark Zuckerberg is not the only leader, but he is appreciated the most and he is the main one. “Although Zuckerberg is one of those CEOs who embodies the values of his organization, he also appears keen that his colleagues do the same” (Davies, 2012).
Mark Zuckerberg is considered to be a skilled leader. He manages to cooperate with many people successfully. He tried to create something stable and successful for a long period of time, and Facebook really became such project. A famous case occurred when he rejected Yahoo’s offer to buy Facebook for $1bn in 2006. Zuckerberg did so even when many analysts considered this deal to be very good for Facebook. Zuckerberg is concentrated on longer-term focus, and he really believes in what he and his team are doing (Davies, 2012).
Zuckerberg is responsible for the worldwide success of Facebook because he is a good leader. His leadership can be analyzed well by studying the experience of people who work for him. The main points of Zuckerberg’s leadership are:
- respect to debates among his team
- not being sentimental
- experiencing all things contextually
- making people do something, ‘pushing’ them (Carlson, 2012).
Mark Zuckerberg appreciates people who are confident in their own abilities and skills and not very emotional. He poses his employees for his employees to cope with. However, he does not develop his employees much; he wants them to develop themselves. Mark Zuckerberg is not a charismatic person; it is quite easy to communicate and work with him. He is very demanding and focuses much on his business – Facebook (Carlson, 2012).
Many people consider Mark Zuckerberg very autocratic. However, it is not like this in reality. He appreciates his employees and tries to listen to their thoughts or advices. He listens attentively, and then announces his conclusion or decision. Mark Zuckerberg can be characterized as "tough but fair". Actually, Mark Zuckerberg is a good person to cooperate with, however, he does not fit all people. If a person likes to develop constantly and to achieve more and more in life, it will be good for him/her to work with Mark Zuckerberg. He appreciates desire to develop. However, if a person wants to receive everything at once and simply take a rest after all, Mark Zuckerberg is not a good person to cooperate with. His leadership is aimed at constant self-development (Carlson, 2012).
There are many things that are useful to learn from Mark Zuckerberg’s experience. He is always focused. When he founded Facebook, he had a certain purpose – where to go and what to become. Mark Zuckerberg always listens to his employees and uses their advices. Mark Zuckerberg believes in his product and business. There were bad times of Facebook, nevertheless, he managed to cope with problems and make his project successful. Mark Zuckerberg is always transparent about Facebook’s future direction. He shares his visions with employees. Therefore, they know what they should do well. Employees feel as they are one team or one family. Mark Zuckerberg has strategic thinking. He plans everything for the future (Samson, 2013).
Mark Zuckerberg’s leadership style is mostly democratic (or participative). “Democratic leaders make the final decisions, but they include team members in the decision-making process. They encourage creativity, and team members are often highly engaged in projects and decisions” (Leadership Styles. Choosing the Right Style for the Situation).
Mark Zuckerberg is a good leader, because his project, Facebook, is successful for many years. He is a democratic leader; and this type of leadership is the most appreciated in our days. Therefore, it would be wise to emulate some features of Mark Zuckerberg to be a good leader. However, I would also do some things differently.
There are many things to emulate. The most important one is that Mark Zuckerberg is a democratic leader. This style of leadership is popular nowadays and has many advantages. Therefore, I would use this style of leadership, too. There are many reasons to do so. Democratic leadership involves many employees in decision-making process. I consider this positive, because I think that employees should participate in company’s operations. I consider it fair. Moreover, more opinions are better than one. Employees can make good propositions (Democratic Leadership Style, n. d.).
There are some more reasons to use democratic leadership style like Mark Zuckerberg. Communication becomes better. A leader is able to understand what the employees feel and think, and it helps to make performance better. Moreover, democratic leadership style helps to create good environment in the workplace. It helps the entire organization to work more effectively, too (Democratic Leadership Style, n. d.).
There are also some other things to learn from Mark Zuckerberg. In my opinion, he is positive in being transparent. Fairness and transparency are good for any business. I think, employees should know everything important about their company, its projects, vision, plans for the future, etc. With this knowledge, they will be able to realize what they do, what the goal is. Very often, employees just aim to earn money and like their job. I think it is not sufficient to the organization. The company should take care of itself as a whole, not only of individual workers. It is important to inform them about its aims, plans, vision. If CEOs are fair and transparent, employees will appreciate them more. In addition, they will appreciate their company and its goals. Transparency can help to encourage employees to work not only for themselves but also for their company and its success, because they will understand and appreciate its goals. The success of a company can mean their own success.
One more thing I like about Mark Zuckerberg is his attitude to his workers. I would like to use such approach in some situations. I respect the thing that he does not push his employees constantly. He is democratic. He listen to employees, he tries to listen to their advices if they are good. However, he is always changing and growing, and he wants his employees to do the same. Mark Zuckerberg thinks that employees should try to develop constantly, and they should do it themselves. To my opinion, it is right is some way. People should always develop if they want to become successful. It is not good when a person is made to develop, but he/she does not want to develop him/herself.
Nevertheless, there are some things that I would do differently if I were a business leader. As it was stated above, I appreciate Mark Zuckerberg’s attitude to employee’s self-development. However, I would change it in some way. He does not develop his employees, they should develop themselves. I think that employees should be developed by a leader in some situations. Of course, self-development is important. However, sometimes a leader should help them to grow personally, especially if this development is positive for a leader, too.
